Send messages and create group chats
Messenger conversations are private to their participants. Use a direct chat for a one-to-one conversation or a group chat when several members need the same discussion.
Start a direct chat from Messenger
- In the top navigation, select the paper-plane Messenger button. In the mobile app, select the paper-plane icon.
- In Messenger, select New chat. If the button opens a menu, select New chat again.
- Enter the member's name in the search field.
- Select the member from the results.
- Write your message in the field at the bottom of the chat and select the send button.
You can also open Community, select a member, and select Message on their profile. A Message button is also available on member results in the general search. These paths open the existing direct chat or create one if needed.
Create a group chat
- In the top navigation, select the paper-plane Messenger button.
- Select New chat, then select New group.
- Optionally select the camera area to add a group image.
- Enter a name for the group.
- In Add people to your group, search for a member and select the person. Repeat this for everyone you want to add.
- Select Create.
- Write your message and select the send button.
A group requires a name and at least one other participant. The person who creates it becomes its owner and receives the management controls.
Follow new activity
Chats with unread messages show a badge in the navigation and an unread marker in the chat list. Opening an unread message marks it as seen. Your preferences determine whether a new message also produces an in-app, push, or email notification.
